Visualizing the ecosystem of rumors, conspiracy theories and hoaxes that surrounded the 2016 US presidential election was the goal for the graphics package we created for director Andrew Rossi and his HBO documentary, After Truth, Disinformation and the Cost of Fake News. The documentary takes the viewer on a journey through some of the top fake news stories that surrounded the 2016 election and their real-world impacts. We created a package that complements the serious tone and chaotic commentary of the film by keeping the display of information clean, clear and connected.

Early Design Exploration

We began by using unique visual references to design six concepts for the opening of the film. Then, we developed a wide variety of logos and different versions of the internal graphics for the film that would create the timelines, the “propaganda pipeline” tweets, and other interfaces you see on screen.

We created a package that complements the serious tone and chaotic commentary of the film by keeping the display of information clean, clear and connected.

Once the main title animation was locked, we applied the language to all lower thirds, text-on-screen, and the six main stories in the film. Using the detailed research provided from the Abstract team, we wove a fully-fleshed out web of information for the larger pieces like Jade Helm, Seth Rich and Pizzagate. With these locked and loaded, the other stand-alone moments such as the video treatments, tweets, and memes were united in a seamless way, connecting the collection of user-created materials to the larger universe of relevant news stories in the film.

Lower Third & On-Screen Text Animations

Fake news is pervasive and explaining the universe from which it stems visually challenges the amount of information you can put on the screen. Showing the layers of each story was critical in conveying the complexity of real vs. fake news and the consequences of disinformation. It was great to team up with the incredible team at Abstract Productions to keep us honest and the collaborative process alive. A big thanks!
